Morbius is the latest entry in Sony’s Spider-Man universe, and it will center around the titular living vampire played by Jared Leto. The film will follow the story of Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist who is trying to find a cure for a rare blood disease, but upon doing so, turns himself into a vampire instead. Alongside the film’s exact plot details, Morbius‘ place in the vast Multiverse is still unknown, leading fans to speculate if the film is set in the MCU or the universe where Tom Hardy’s Venom resides.
After experiencing multiple delays, mostly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Morbius finally landed an April 2022 release timeline. This means that marketing is poised to ramp up, and new evidence indicates that the promotional push is about to start.
For starters, Sony Pictures previously unveiled a brand-new featurette to give fans an overview of Morbius’ comics history while also confirming that a final trailer will arrive. Now, a special look at Sony’s newest Marvel anti-hero has been revealed.
Morbius Meets the MCU’s Adrian Toomes
Sony Pictures officially revealed the final trailer for Morbius, showcasing fresh new looks at the titular vampire alongside several connections to the wider Marvel universe.
The two-minute trailer offers the best look yet at Morbius’ final vampire form, with the character’s action sequences taking center stage. In addition, new footage of Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes from Spider-Man: Homecoming was also unveiled.
In the trailer, Toomes appears to be talking to Leto’s Marvel antihero, with him telling Morbius that his newfound superpower is a gift.
Is Morbius ready to Set in the MCU?
Morbius‘ latest trailer raises more questions than answers about the film’s connections to the MCU, especially considering that Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes is featured prominently in the new footage. There’s a strong chance that Morbius’ confusing connections to the MCU and Tom Hardy’s Venom’s universe are intentional to lure fans to watch the film in theaters.
It is unknown if Keaton will have a major role in the movie, but it seems that the Spider-Man: Homecoming villain could be the character who pushes Jared Leto’s Marvel anti-hero to embrace his newfound superpower.
Leto previously shared that Keaton has a surprising role in Morbius, with him saying that the Adrian Toomes actor is one of his “favorites.” While it’s a given that Keaton’s role is a spoiler, any dialogue mentioned in the film that would connect to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man could cement the fact that Morbius is set in the MCU, thus putting fans’ speculation to rest.
However, the second trailer’s confusing line indicates that Morbius knows Venom, thus, it is another piece in the puzzle that needs to be addressed in the film.
At some point, many would agree that a certain Spider-Man will eventually show up in Sony’s Marvel universe to know whether some of these films are set in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Who knows? Maybe Morbius could feature a cameo from the web-slinger to put an end to those theories, and it could be set in motion by Keaton’s Homecoming villain.
Morbius is set to premiere in theaters on April 1, 2022.
